A new year about to begin...

December 31, 2010

And a couple more finishes to end the year....

A baby quilt for a sweet little girl due in January. I teased Selena last spring that if she wanted one of my quilts, she needed to have a baby. Little did I know she suspected she was expecting. Two weeks later, she sweetly said, "Amy, remember what you told me I had to do to get one of your quilts?" I was so excited for her and her husband. They are the SWEETEST couple.

Fabric used, Simply Sweet and Kona cotton. Pattern used, Charming Stars.

Fun scrappy back....

And my favorite part, the candy stripe binding.

One more kayak quilt. This is for my Rusty's kayaking buddy, Vic. They have been friends for 25+ years. All 8 yards of the kayaking fabric is gone! Yeah!!

Thank you all for your kind comments and encouragement. I look foreword to seeing what creative endeavors you all bring in 2011!

God bless...

Layer Cake Quilt Along Block #5

December 28, 2010

I messed this one up a couple of times before I got it right.

Rusty's Kayak Quilt x's 2

I chose to add very narrow red boarders to it and bind it in red with a few scrappy pieces of the batik navy blue dots tossed in.

I don't prewash my fabric and I was a wee bit concerned about the batik bleeding, but it didn't at all. Whew!!

Now that its finished being quilted, all the little mistakes don't seem to matter. It won't win any awards and it won't pass a critical quilters eyes and that's okay with me! The joy is in the process and the learning of new skills.

I started this journey of learning to sew and quilt two years ago, with my Mom's Viking. I've since upgraded to a newer Viking a Platinum 770 and bought a Juki TL98Q.

For the last few weeks, I've been mulling over in my mind whether or not if it's okay to call myself a quilter instead of saying, "I am learning how to quilt," because aren't we all learning more and more about this craft each and every time we create a quilt?

Then I made a collage of most of the things I've made this last year and I realized...

  I am a quilter

My only wish? That my Mom could know how much of her has rubbed off on me....

Happy New Year, everyone!!

Merry Christmas!

December 24, 2010

The GREATEST miracle of all...God with us.

"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name."
(Philippians 2:5-9)
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
(Mark 10:45)

Crazy busy...

December 12, 2010

I know some people thrive on busyness. I'm not one of them. Being busy overwhelms me and then I can get paralyzed thinking about all that needs to be done. This week is going to be one of those weeks for me.

On a happy note, my cutting table doesn't look like this any longer. =)

Not gonna say...

Procrastinator Extraordinaire

December 10, 2010

If I had to name a character flaw that has caused me the most anxiety, it would be procrastination. I hate to admit it, but I have it fine tuned to an art.

This is not a good thing, people.

In case you were wondering....

My latest anxiety inducing procrastination: my husband's job Christmas party.

Which is tonight.

Tonight!

This is not good...These people pay him. Of all the things to procrastinate, it's not wise procrastinate on something that will cause you to mess up in front of your husband's boss and co-workers.

Did I mention they pay him??

This is NOT good, at all...

Last summer...s.u.m.m.e.r...I was asked if I would play a part in the Christmas play, a Who-Done-It, to which I enthusiastically said, "Sure!"

Last summer...

The party is tonight...

I don't know my part...

I read it twice...

I am doomed...

Except!! *dat dat dahhhh dahhhh*

I found out that Bill, my new best friend and co-worker of my hubby, hasn't even read his part yet!

YES!!!

I'm sharing my procrastinator crown with Bill.

100 blocks

November 30, 2010

I bought my copy of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks magazine last week and drooled over all the great talent found inside of the pages.

Have you gotten your copy yet?

It didn't take me long to decide which block I wanted to make first.

Here is my version and the beginning of a quilt for my hubby.

I was thrilled when I found the kayak fabric for a $1 a yard! Yes, a dollar a yard of 60" wide fabric! The ladies at the store thought I was nuts when I squealed with delight. I'm used to being looked at like I am crazy. I don't mind. =)  My husband loves kayaking thus the squeals.

My squeals, not his.

My husband does not squeal.

I thought I had better make that perfectly clear. {ahem}

I'd love to have it done by Christmas. We'll see!

Safety gadgets

November 27, 2010

After last night's experience, I am actively seeking out gadgets that can help prevent another ER visit.

BTW, you know it looks bad when the ER doctor makes a face when looking at your wound. I got lots of sympathy last night. =)

Here are a few items I've found and I am looking for some first hand experience with them to help me make decisions on what to buy. If any of you know of other things that you have tried and like, I would love to know.

Klutz Glove

O'Lipfa Rotary Cutting Safety Shield

Finger Guards

Surely there are more??

ER visit

November 26, 2010

Did you know rotary blades are very, very sharp? Especially new ones. Lost part of my finger tonight. Waiting for the doctor to come take a look. I shaved a deep slice off the side of my left index finger. I'll spare the gory details. =)

Edit to add:

I think I need one of these for Christmas.

Or a Klutz glove.

Quick projects

Zippered bags to give to the ladies on my husband's side of the family. Pattern can be found on May Your Bobbin Always Be Full. The one thing I changed in the pattern was I  zig-zag stitched the edges to make them more neat. If you have a serger, I would use it for this project. This is an easy and quick project. Do not be afraid of the zippers. They aren't hard to do at all! I've only done one zippered project before these. I am a total novice and I found them to be easy to do.

At 7:30 on Wednesday night, I decided I wanted to make something for my sister-in-law as a "Thank you" for hosting us at her home for Thanksgiving dinner. Four hours later, I had this cute table runner all finished. It looked beautiful on her table.

I've been in the mood to do small projects. Do you have any small projects in the works for Christmas gift giving time?  I'd love to hear your ideas. =)
