Jelly Roll Quilt and Paying it Forward

June 27, 2014

My pile of quilts to have on hand for when I need a quick gift or to donate for a good cause, has dwindled dramatically. And that is a good thing. =) Now I can make some, "just for fun" quilts to get the pile built up again.

Does anyone else have a hard time opening up new jelly rolls? They are so cute! This Moda jelly roll by April Cornell is called Nostalgia. It has been sitting in my stash for far too long. It was time to open her up.

I used the tutorial by Missouri Star Quilt Co (video below) to make this 53" x 53" top. I am debating on adding borders to make it a big larger. I need to let it marinate for a bit. The one thing I did differently from the tutorial is I used 5 strips in my strip sets instead of 4.

This last year, I have been so blessed by kind hearted friends. Homemade gifts, fabric and kindness have been poured upon me and I am far overdue to pass that kindness forward. I am going to go through my stash and have some giveaways. I have fat quarter bundles (full and partial), some yardage and who knows what else, that need to go to good homes. Thats my big goal for today, to go through everything and see what I can share with you all. =) Keep checking back, okay?

Have a very happy weekend!!

A Quilt for my Naomi

June 25, 2014

This is my Naomi, who is  a precious, precious friend...In fact, Russ and I consider her to be our second daughter.

Here is a silly picture of us trying to take a selfie in our kayaks. The trick was to not have our boats tip from our laughing so hard!

My sweet Naomi is moving in a few weeks to start a new job. *sob* But it's not too far away that we won't still get to see her and visit. *yay* In fact, we told her we had visitation rights and should get to see her at least once a month. ;) We are holding her to that.

A couple of years ago, I scoured the internet to find a Simplicity layer cake by Moda for her birthday (our birthdays are a couple of weeks apart). She loves that line as much as I do! The plan was for her to make herself a quilt. She started one, but with her impeding move, she knew it wouldn't get done for a long time and asked me if I would make it for her. Of course!!

I dug around in my stash for other fabric that played nicely with the Simplicity fabric. I think the end result is so pretty and sweet. Just like my Naomi. =) (The hanging baskets are flowers that Naomi planted for me as a surprise.)

Naomi has promised to use it until it falls into itty bitty pieces. =) That's what I want her to do. I want her to feel the love I have for her every time she cuddles with her quilt. =)

Now that I have made myself cry, its time for me to get to work!!

Have a happy Wednesday, friends!!

A Do Over

June 24, 2014

After I made this wall hanging, I knew I had to redo the embroidery. The letters were too chunky and bugged me. A do-over had to happen.

Tick-tock...

Two years later, I finally got it finished. So much better...

Next up, get the binding on Naomi's quilt, then I can show it to you. =)

Have a happy Tuesday!

Special Gift from over the Pond

June 23, 2014

I want to introduce you to a dear friend of mine from London. Her name is Jen and she blogs at Glinda Quilts. Three months ago, Jen tripped and fell and badly damaged her humerus bone as well as damaged the ball and socket to her shoulder. She has only recently begun to start sewing again after her surgery to fix things up.

Jen is famous for making pants bags. What are pants bags? Jen explains:

(*Pants Bags is the name I call these drawstring bags as I use them when I travel - I don't like to put my drawers in other people's drawers, so to speak!)

Jen generously made me a pants bag of my very own and I can't even begin to tell you how much I love it!! It will be used when Russ and I go away for our weekend trips. =)

Be still my heart...Look at this gorgeous fabric for the lining!

And she shared some of her precious stash with me. =)

Thank you, Jen, so very much. I am blessed to have "met" you, dear friend. =)

Be sure to visit Jen at Glinda Quilts

Have a Happy Monday!

All Iowa Shop Hop ~ Another round

June 20, 2014

Today was a long and fun filled day. At 6:30 this morning, Russ and I were on the road with the motorcycle to head to southern Iowa to hop more shops in the All Iowa Shop Hop. We visited shops in Muscatine, Burlington, Tipton and Mt. Vernon (where I grew up and went to school). Sandi's Sewing Connection gave all shop hoppers 40% off store wide. Ummm, yes, I spent a penny or two at her shop. *wink*  Truth be told, I bought something in almost every shop we have stopped. We arrived home 11 hours later, sunburned, exhausted and with smiles on our sunkissed faces. =)

This what followed me home today....

Fabric for quilt backs. I have a quilt top made of this line, Sweet Shoppe Calico Candies and I needed a back for it, so now I do. =) I haven't shared this top with you all yet. One of these days I will get to it. =)

Yardages of white on white. Always need that in the stash.

Fat quarters with text print. I love text print on fabric. Can't get enough!

Fun dots and brights... Jelly roll and charm packs were 40% off. I had to have them!

More gray prints to add to my growing collection. I really need to decide what I want to make with them one of these days. If you have any ideas for me, let me know!!

Now comes the part where I total up what I have spent so I can pay back the budget. Good thing I have a job! Have I mentioned how much I love my job lately?

All Iowa Shop Hop Hopping

June 14, 2014

Russ and I took off on the motorcycle yesterday to do some shop hopping for the All Iowa Shop Hop. We visited quilt shops we didn't know existed!!

The ladies got such a kick out of Russ marching into the shops with his Moda bag carrying the shop hop passport and the fabric charms that are handed out at each shop. He can really  play things up big. He would walk in and announce, "I am a man on a mission and I need to have my passport stamped!" At one point, I looked over and he was helping a gal pick out fabric for a project! Yes, this is my manly man, a hunter, motorcycle riding, gun loving guy with cowboy boots and chaps on playing with fabric. He also bought himself a project to work on. =)

Of course, a little bit of fabric made it's way home and into my stash. =)

Time to get my passport ready. I want to visit my local quilt shops today. =)

Have a happy weekend!

Sewing Machine Cover

June 8, 2014

Since my featherweight has joined my sewing room, Miss Juki has found herself on the floor. To help her feel better, I made her a cover so she won't get all dusty.

Never fear, Miss Juki, you will be used very soon! I promise!!

Lamby Dish Towel

June 7, 2014

I fell totally head over heals in love with this darling lamby dish towel made by the very talented Heather@ Vintage Grey and now she is here living with me!

Heather does such a fantastic job at making the packaging look so pretty. The tag was so cute that it earned a place of honor at the top of my tree. =)

Thank you, Heather!!

To see all the darling items Heather has to sell, check out her store Vintage Grey. Her workmanship is second to none. Really...

Have a happy weekend!!

Sew Sweet Bee - May block

June 4, 2014

Jennie @ Clover and Violet requested blocks using her scrappy star tutorial

I get nervous making things for other people. I want it to be perfect!! I hope she likes it!!

Quilters Rule...Traveling case for rulers and cutting mat

June 1, 2014

To make my next trip with my featherweight a little bit easier, I am making Lilac Lane's Quilters Rule case. You can find the pattern in her Etsy store.

This is the fabric I have chosen for mine. The top selvedge print will be the outside of the case, as well as the inside lining. The other three fabrics are the pockets. I have to wait for the webbing I ordered to get here, in the meantime, I will get done as much as I can. =) I'll keep you posted. =)

Have a happy week, friends!!
