Kitchen makeover {an update}

February 9, 2012

Some of you have already noticed that there are a lot of new posts all of a sudden. I decided to merge my original blog, A Redeemed Sheep, with this one.   A Quilting Sheep will still mainly be focused on my quilting and sewing, but occasionally, a few posts on my family will pop up here and there, as well. I am trying to simplify my life a bit and this was one easy way to do that.

My kitchen has made progress. Wanna see??

This wall shelf was made by some friends of ours. They decided to update their house, so they sold it to us for a song. With the bead board backing, it works perfectly in the kitchen. We slapped a fresh coat of paint on it and it was all set to go. I'm thinking it would be fun to have different plates to display as the seasons change. The towels probably won't stay there. I just stuck them there because I didn't know what I wanted to do with them yet.

When Russ and I went away on our weekend a few weeks ago, we found these two shelves at a consignment shop. They work perfectly.

I need to refinish or paint the quilt holders, until I get that done, they are being held onto the wall with Command strips. I love them and I use them all the time for things around the house. For example, I use them to hold outlet strips on the side of my cutting desk in my sewing room, that way I can get to the outlets easily when they are needed.

I'm not sure what I will do with this wall space. Something will come up, I'm sure. I am toying with the idea of screwing in some mug hooks under the shelf to hang some utensils or cups with handles. Or I have considered using a curtain rod of some sort to put between the feet of the shelf, cover it with fabric and hang light things (vintage pot holders, or decorations) from it.

China hutch....

I do love big jars...

The hand beater belongs to my friend's grandmother. She was tired of it taking up space in her drawers and asked if I wanted it. Of course I did! I told her I would store it for her and when she wants it back, she just needs to ask. In the meantime, I am taking care of it. =)

I'm so classy. Look at that crooked towel. =D

Maybe someday this little lady will get a makeover.

Thanks for joining me on my little tour. =)

Have a great Thursday!

What's going on...

December 29, 2011

Starting Monday, the hubz, boys and I have been busy little bees giving my kitchen a much needed update. All that's left is getting the chair rail on.

I should have taken better before pictures. This one was taken several years ago. Mitch is way taller than this now. This side of the kitchen had off white walls with the apple wall paper boarder.

A few of the walls on the other side of the kitchen had this very dark hunter green. Yes, the 90's....

A fresh coat of a light aqua paint and some bead board paneling in the process of being painted a high gloss white.

Tonight I put a few things back. The plan is to get the corner pieces and the chair railing on tomorrow. The kitchen is so much brighter now!! Eventually I want shelving to be on the back wall up near the ceiling and on the other wall to the right to store/display my Pyrex and other things I have been collecting.

See my new cover for my Kitchen Aid mixer? (I used the pattern by Heart of Mary.) The fabric Carrie Nelson's Fresh Palette. I'm using her line for the curtains and eventually a table cloth and/or table runner and anything else I can make as what I have in my stash lasts. Oh, and the mini dresden plate wall hanging I made needs to find it's spot. =D

Someday a new floor and a new counter top will be added, but that's a ways away.

This was my Christmas present and I love it....

Good-bye, trees...

June 23, 2011

Even though pine trees are not my favorite, it was still sad to see them go.

They had a needle disease and were dying.

When they were healthy, they provided nice privacy for the deck. Lately, they were losing so many needles it was time to remove them. They made the deck unusable because of the sharp needles that always covered the deck floor.

I'm considering making a bench out of the stumps and place potted plants on it.

Today I'm going to power wash the deck and make it look nice again. Ugh...It's so disgusting.

Guess its time...

January 29, 2010

...for a new dryer. I went to check to see if the clothes were dry. As I was walking down the steps, I got a whiff of smoke. When I opened the dryer, it became very clear where the source of smoke was coming from. Yup...My dryer was catching fire. I am very thankful I caught it before there were flames coming out of it!!

Edit...Maybe not!! I had Mitchell help me clean out the vent pipe exit that leads outside and he was able to get out LOTS of lint. Maybe it was just clogged??

Curtains...At last!!

September 11, 2009

My living room has been without curtains for many, many years. We have shopped for them several times, but the price kept me from buying them. Yesterday, I got a wild idea...I love the vintage pillowcases and other linens I have found at Goodwill and Salvation Army. What if I made them my curtains??

Naked window...
Hardware and tools...
These are the coolest things!! You just clip your material on with the clips and slide the ring on the curtain rod. I had no idea such things existed!! I need to get out more.

The future curtains...

Ta da!!! I think it looks cute, and I can change them easily thanks to the cool clip rings. Easy peasy...
I decided to go all out and dig out some material from my mom and sew it up for the other window. I need to buy a few more clip rings. Other than that, I think it looks just fine. Better than naked windows, I'm thinking. :-D

Monday, Monday...

July 20, 2009

The weather is going to be perfect today! In the upper 70's and not humid. There is so much I ought to be doing, like finishing some of my sewing projects, painting my bedroom, refinishing the table Russ bought for me for my birthday, but instead I am being lazy. Not a good trait to have...In fact, it's sinful to be so lazy....*big sigh*

Okay, I'm going to find something constructive to do!

update:

Here is what I am going to do today...get it started at least...paint my bedroom and add a boarder. Here is what I purchased....

Mitchell feels sorry for his dad.

Edit again: Russ likes it!!! Here is Russ holding the boarder up to the freshly painted wall to get an idea of what it looks like. I can't wait until we get the boarder up. :o)

Painting day

July 13, 2009

Today, Reagan and I are going to paint his room. Reagan has Holden's old room that he painted a deep barn red. We are changing it to a blue (exact shade yet to be decided). Today's goal is to get the primer on and go shopping for the final paint color. Depending on how long that all takes, maybe we can get the final color on the walls by tonight.

I'll post some before and after pictures later. :o)

*****

Before....
First coat of primer.

Two coats of primer done...

The final coat of paint! I really like the shade of blue he picked out.

All walls painted...
As soon as Russ gets the window trim done, we can add the curtains and window shades. His new comforter is brown and white, so the "theme" is brown and blue." The room will look better tomorrow after his furniture is arranged and the new bedding is on his bed.

I can't wait to paint MY room!! I was thinking PINK! LOL!

My bathtub is C.L.E.A.N!

May 22, 2009

This will make sense, so hang in there. :o)

I have had 3 adjustments by the chiropractor this week and it's going well. I'm sore, but nothing too horrible. He placed me on some supplements and I do seems to be feeling better. I have more energy and people have commented that I look like I feel better. I think I am less scatterbrained, too. I have a lot of tightness in my upper back/neck area and that's where they do a lot of work to try to get it to relax more.

One of the things that he recommended I do, and I think it's goofy, is to take two baths a week in epsom salts and one bath with 1 quart of vinegar. It's supposed to help pull the toxins out of my body. Whatever...Last night I soaked in the vinegar. As I was soaking, I noticed that the bathtub began to feel slimy. I was pretty grossed out and didn't soak for as long as I was supposed to. What I discovered is that vinegar removes soap scum! I have been searching for years to find a product to get my bathtub clean with out killing myself and my back. Nothing really worked, so I don't clean it as often as I should because of the chemical fumes and it hurts my back to lean over the edge and scrub. I used a bit of Comet cleanser and lightly scrubbed the tub and it looks brand new! It's so clean it squeaks!! I have no idea if the vinegar helped my body or not, but it sure made my bathtub clean!

Do you remember traveling all over your neighborhood carrying a big box stuffed full of May baskets to leave in secret at the doorstops of your friends? May Day is one of my favorite childhood memories. It reminds me of sweet and gentler time. Growing up, my baskets were usually styrofoam, plastic or paper cups with colorful pipe cleaners attached on them as handles. I didn't only deliver the baskets in my neighborhood, but all over the small town where I grew up. Inside of the May baskets are delicious goodies, usually left over Easter candy, popped pop corn and a few violets or dandelions to make the "basket" look pretty. And, *gasp* all the candy was unwrapped!

Do your children celebrate May Day?

Carpet is G.O.N.E!

April 24, 2009

Reagan and I worked all day to get it done. I love working with him.

Good-bye, carpet

April 23, 2009

Hello, wood floors!! The rug is hiding some stains in the wood from pet accidents, but we are confident we can sand most of it out and make it look nice.

I hope to get the rest of the carpet up and out in the next few days. I'm doing small manageable sections at a time. The worst part is pulling the wood strips off around the edges of the floor and the long U-shaped staples. It will be worth the work and the aching muscles.

Growing up, there was an unwritten rule that we could raid the change jar on my Daddy's dresser top. It was a a race between my brother and I to get there first.

As I was pondering about this memory I began to dissect it out a bit.

I never took the change if Daddy was in the room. That seemed wrong. He never just handed it to me. So, in essence, I was stealing from him, right?

However, if he allowed it and knew placing the change on his dresser was an open invitation for me to take it, was it really stealing? If he didn't want me to take it, wouldn't he have told me? I need to ask Daddy and get his viewpoint. :)

In my home, we have several change jars. I'm the only one raids them. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Come join us on Childhood Memories Friday.
