2018 Sew Sweet Bee ~ Finished

October 23, 2019

Introducing my 2018 Sew Sweet Bee quilt! I began quilting it last November. I don't know why I waited so long to get back to it. *shaking my head* It took less than a day to get it finished.

It finishes at a perfect cuddle size of 65"x65" and it will be used a lot this fall and winter!

This is my last finish for a bit. All the tops that had been basted are now all on the finished pile. Yay!  I ran out of batting and I can't baste the few tops that are still waiting, so guess what I can do now? Yup! Start a new project!! I have had these six Fig Tree charm packs in my stash for over two years. It's time to open them up, mix them up and make them into a quilt. =) Stay tuned!

Happy Valentine's Day and Queen Bee

February 14, 2019

💘 Happy Valentine's Day! 💖

February is my month to be Queen Bee for the Sew Sweet Bee club. It only makes sense to have my bee sisters make some heart blocks for me, right? Or you could say I was overthinking what block to have them make and I finally landed on the one that makes the most sense because of Valentine's Day landing in February. Or, I lack imagination. Or all of the above. 😉  No matter, I chose a darling ombre heart block created by Julie @ The Crafty Quilter. Here is the link to her tutorial: Ombre Heart Quilt Block Tutorial. I asked for them to make them in any combination they chose of various red, pinks or a mixture of the two, with low volume or off white background. I hope they will all go together well enough to just sew them together and make a baby quilt for donation. I am waiting for them all to get there before I make my own blocks to add to the mix.

Russ and I don't go all out for Valentine's Day, but he always buys me a card and candy. He is thoughtful that way. This year, he bought a really cool card! No candy since that is not allowed on Keto. 😶 I didn't buy him a thing but trust me, I love up on him every day! 💝

Have a sweet day, and be kind to everyone you meet. You don't know what kind of heartache they may be dealing with.

Sew Sweet Bee 2017 - Friendship Love

November 1, 2018

I finished my 2017 Sew Sweet Bee quilt this week.
You can find the tutorial for the Friendship Love block here.

The carpet of leaves look pretty...

My label along with the label made by Denny @laughsewgarden.

This weekend we will be busy raking up the pretty carpet of leaves. *wink*

Works in Progress

May 24, 2018

All of the blocks for the Ombre Gems Quilt Along are done, but as you can see, I have not gathered up my courage to trim them. I really need to just do it and let it be what it will be. It will be really pretty when it is assembled, even if I lose a point or two or ten.

In Sew Sweet Bee news,  Dori @ The Red Feedsack is our Queen Bee for the month of May. She asked for a scrappy courthouse steps block.

I am keeping up with my temperature quilt! I have another row almost ready to add to it. Look! New colors! That means warm weather has finally arrived in Iowa! Yes!! I love summer!

Now that the warmer weather is here, I need to get outside and baste a few of the quilt tops that I have been allowing to stack up. I need to get them done! I don't like having more than 4 tops waiting to be quilted and I have at least 9 (not counting the two quilt where the blocks simply need to be sewn together).

Okay, I just talked myself into getting at least one of them basted!

Have a happy weekend!!

Many irons in the fire

April 23, 2018

Iron one: Temperature quilt

I am all caught up! I have decided to make mine with an 18 x 21 (or 22) grid, so every 18 days a new row gets added to the quilt.  Warmer weather has finally arrived here in Iowa. My gardens are cleaned out and we can finally take walks again. Very soon, more yellows and oranges will be able to be added to my quilt which makes me very happy!

Iron two: Pretty Petals 2.0

I finally dove in and cut the fabric for the Pretty Petals 2.0 quilt. I love how the colors look together. I was worried that I wouldn't like it as much as my first one. I like it just as much and maybe even more! It's been fun seeing it all come together.

Iron three: Sew Sweet Bee Pinwheel Star

Last, but not least, I received the last Sew Sweet Bee block from Dori @ redfeedsack. Actually, she sent me two, along with some sweet scissors and a pin cushion. *love* As soon as the sashing fabric I ordered arrives, I can begin to plan on how to put it all together.

Iron four: Ombre Gems Quilt Along

No pictures, but I am all caught up and making progress. I still haven't trimmed them yet. I decided to wait until they are all made. They are so pretty! I am glad I didn't talk myself out of making this one.

Have a happy day and week, everyone!!

More Sew Sweet Bee Blocks

March 16, 2018

Almost all of my Sew Sweet Bee blocks have arrived! Now, I have been calling them Pinwheel Stars because of the little pinwheel in the center, but I knew there was a name for this block, but I couldn't remember. Then, one day it hit me...It's a LeMoyne Star, but not made traditionally with diamond pieces and set in with Y seams. I feel pretty silly for not figuring that out until weeks later!! Can I still call it a Pinwheel Star??

This block is from Cassie. =) She has darling things in her Etsy shop, so be sure to check it out! Seriously love the charm pack she sent!!

This one is from Jane. Aren't the pins cute?

This block is from Kim and she surprised me with thread gloss from @robotmomsews. It smells heavenly!!

Last, but not least, is this beauty from Luanne. I always welcome more Bonnie and Camille fabrics in my stash. =)

When the last block comes, I will take a picture of all them together. I am excited to get this one put together!!

Have a happy weekend!!

This sweet block and microwave bowl is from Linda. =)

And today's mail brought me a beautiful orange block from Tuki!!

You can find the instructions on how to make a Pinwheel Block block on my tutorial page. =)

Have a happy weekend!!

Queen Bee - Sew Sweet Bee

February 15, 2018

The mail days are going to be fun the next couple of weeks because the Pinwheel Star blocks I have asked my bee sisters to make are beginning to show up! The first one came yesterday, which made my awesome Valentine's Day, even better!!

Lisa @lisa12822 on Instagram made this gorgeous block!! I told the ladies they got brownie points if they could make one with orange or yellow Bonnie and Camille fabrics. Lisa nailed it! I feel very honored she shared some of her precious Bonnie and Camille stash with me in such a beautiful way. I may or may not have hugged her block...Just sayin'...

You can find the tutorial to the Pinwheel Star block in my tutorial section.

Have a happy Thursday!

Pinwheel Star - Sew Sweet Bee

February 1, 2018

This is my fourth year to be a member of an online bee called Sew Sweet Bee. Donna @ Donna's Lavender Nest is our hostess of the mostest and keeps us all organized! February is my turn to be Queen Bee. =) This year I have asked my hive sisters to make me a Pinwheel Star (or a Lemoyne star) using any of Bonnie and Camille's fabric lines.  This block has many variations and you can make it only using half square triangles, however, trimming lots of half square triangles is not my favorite thing to do, so I worked out the block to use HST and flying geese. You get less HST to trim and fewer seams in the final block.

Let's get started, shall we?

For a 12" finished block, you will need two fat eighths of contrasting colors and a fat quarter (there will be left over) of a background color. In my case, Kona Snow.

Cutting Instructions:

From each of the two contrasting colors cut (4) 3 ½ x 3 ½ squares and (2) 4” squares.

From the background fabric cut (4) 3 ½ x 3 ½ squares and (4) 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles.

Gather all the  4” squares to make 4 half square triangles (HST). I draw two lines to sew on and cut them apart in the middle. Press them towards the dark side.

Square them up to 3 ½” and set them aside for now.

Next, you make (4) flying geese units using the (4) 3 ½” x 6 ½” background rectangles and (4) 3 ½” squares of each color.  Sew all 4 of one color on one side of the flying geese and then sew all 4 of the other color on the other side of the flying geese. I go ahead and sew an extra line on the flying geese where it gets trimmed off to make bonus HST for other projects.

Press to the wings.

Lay out your blocks so that the HST form a pinwheel that matches up with the flying geese. (So sorry the picture is so blurry!)

Now sew the HST into a pinwheel. On the back side of the pinwheel, I remove a few stitches and swirl the center seam to make it lay flatter. The pinwheel should measure 6 1/2" x 6 1/2".

Now it's time to assemble the block!

Sew the (4) 3 ½” background squares on each end of two flying geese blocks and press to the background squares.

Sew 2 flying geese blocks to the pinwheel block and press towards the pinwheel.

The seams should all nest nicely when you sew the three rows together to make your Pinwheel Star.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
