Barn Star II, a shop sample

September 19, 2018

Sometime in the next couple of months, I will be teaching a class on how to piece this darling little quilt by Corriander Quilts called Barn Star II.  For the sample, I chose the fabrics Vintage Holiday by Bonnie and Camille

I am usually wary of charm pack patterns because they often tell you to cut the 5" charms in fourths and even though mathematically, I should end up with 4 - 2 1/2" squares, I never do. They end up smaller and I have to adjust seam allowances when piecing. Often times, I end up with things that don't line up and piece together well. Instead, when I use patterns that call for 2 1/2" squares, I cut them from fat quarters or from scraps. Never a charm square. This pattern did not call for any 2 1/2" squares. Yes, there was some waste with the charm square, but the pieces are cut accurately and thus, it pieced together like a dream. I will make this pattern again!

Do you have a favorite charm pack pattern?

Until next time! Have a happy, quilty day!

Free Wheeling Single Girl - Fabric Pull

September 13, 2018

After weeks of agonizing over this decision, these are the fabrics I have pulled from my stash and purchased for my Free Wheeling Single Girl quilt by Denyse Schmidt.  Notice the pink fabric with the sheep. =)

Fabrics: Flea Market Fancy, Grunge by Moda, various other fabrics lines by Denyse Schmidt and Cotton and Steel. The background is a safe Kona Snow.

You can find more information in this blog post about the sew along that has just begun. Come join us!!

Giant Swoon

September 12, 2018

I made an oversized (52"x52") Swoon baby quilt earlier this year for the class I taught. I finally got around to getting it quilted and it's now ready to be gifted to some sweet baby.  =)

Have a happy day!

A little bit about me...In August, Russ and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary and we are enjoying our empty nest years.  Though I do occasionally share our traveling adventures and some glimpses of our grandchildren, I try to keep that to a bare minimum and stay on topic for my blog, which is the doings and happening in my sewing room.

I first began quilting seriously right around 2007-2008. My personality tends to the more introverted side, which means going to classes to learn how to make a quilt was not an option. Instead, I turned to the internet and found helpful tutorials on blogs, videos on YouTube and used good old fashioned trial and error to teach myself how to piece a quilt as well as do all the quilting on a quilt using my domestic sewing machine. For a short time, I had a long arm machine, but I really didn't enjoy using it, so I sold it. I mostly quilt using a walking foot and I keep telling myself I need to learn to free motion quilt. One of these days!

Four and a half years ago, I began working part-time at Cotton Creek Mill, a quilt shop in historic West Branch, Iowa.  My favorite part of my job is to be an encouragement to the ladies and supporting them with their projects. It's fun to see their ideas spring to life!

I know I enjoy seeing what other people have made, so I thought I would share a few of my favorite quilts I have made over the years. There are more pictures and information in the links provided.
