A couple of years ago, I bought the book Material Obsession because of the quilt on the cover.
As one of my goals for this year, I wanted to make my own.
Fresh out of the dryer, here is my version of that quilt.
The one thing I chose to do was to make a large whole cloth background. Cutting the back ground fabric into individual squares for each dresden plate and then resewing them back together would mess up the polka dots. I took two yardages of the fabric, carefully lining up the dots and sewed them together. I then laid it out on the floor and pinned each dresden where I wanted it. After the placement was decided, I glued them in place. It was a bit harder to work with it that way, but the end result made it worth it.
I did a lot of echo quilting...Twisting and turning over and over again.
I am so pleased with how it turned out...
Final measurement: 78" x 78".

Not so much of a 'must' make but I would really like to do something challenging this year - curves and dresedens feel a bit beyond me still but if there's one thing making quilts teaches you it's that 'practice makes (nearly!) perfect' so perhaps I'll just dive on in there :)

ReplyDeleteWow! Amy it's fantastic! I can't tell where you seamed the background fabric. It's definitely bulkier to move around when applying the dresden plates but it's so worth the effort.

Love all the RED!!! I have a couple of must-makes, but I must make myself get in the mood first! A Christmas quilt for sure this year...and maybe a quilt for one of my daughters.

ReplyDeleteYour quilt came out so nicely! It is very pretty. I'm sure you must be very happy with it. My goal this year is to make one landscape quilt a month. In January I made 6 small identical woodland scenes and gave 5 of them away as gifts. Next I think I will make an ocean scene.

ReplyDeleteThat is so absolutely cute. Love the idea of the one solid background. I want to do a dresden plate, I started hand piecing one when I was a kid with scraps of fabric. LOL I think there are double knit polyester, satins, and Lord only knows what else. I bet it is somewhere in my house I should finish it just for giggles.

ReplyDeleteIt is sew very adorable. I love how you didn't want to mess up the polka dots. The whole quilt looks terrific! I don't know how you ever manage to do all that echo quilting on that size quilt. It makes my shoulders hurt just thinking about it.
