I made a quilt for a gift and the backing fabric color bled through to the front of the quilt. I have never had that happen! I soaked it in Synthrapol in hopes it would come out, but no luck.
I guess I need to buy more fabric to make a new baby gift.
I am a little bit heartsick because it turned out so cute. =(

Oh no! How bad is it? Can it be covered by applique?

ReplyDeleteNot sure if it will help but maybe try Shout Color catchers. I use them in the wash and it is amazing how well they work. I've washed darks and lights together when in a hurry and toss one of those in with laundry and the color catcher comes out with all kinds of color on it but clothes are fine.

DeleteAnything with red in it I prewash. Then if it is a gift I give a box of Shout Color Guard sheets with the instructions to use when washing. The damage is done, but it is cute. Chris
ReplyDeleteAwwww, I'm so sorry that this happened to you. Yes, I have been through it ! This post......... http://thedottydline.blogspot.com/2009/12/qwilt-qwisis.html .... describes my ordeal. And it was a favorite of mine, one that I really should make again. I found a home for it with a friend who is in the nursing home and wanted it to cover her legs in her wheel chair. I explained it's 'freckles' to her, but she loved it just the same. I've missed it often !

You can try washing it again with the color catchers. Maybe throw a little oxy clean in with it. At least you found this out before you gave it as a gift and the owner didn't have to go thru this. If not, donate it to a charity group and make a new one. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteYes! Had exactly the same problem with a queen size quilt. After many attempts to correct it, I took it to my favorite quilt shop and consulted with the staff there. They reminded me that in the 70s people soaked their quilts in tea to get an antique look. They suggested I give the quilt to my friend anyway. I did, and guess what? She LOVED it. Why don't you post a picture of it so we can see what happened? That might spark some more ideas.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't deliberately give a damaged quilt to a charity group, but depending on the mom and baby it was meant for, could you give it to her along with the replacement quilt and an explanation. There are never enough baby quilts and even though it's not what you wanted it to be, it'd still be useful for covering up in the stroller or car. Or give it to another mom you know who'd find it useful.
I religiously prewash. However, since it's a baby quilt, it's for peeing on and puking on and getting food on and all those other wonderful messes babies make, so I'd just give it anyway. It's going to be used and abused, that's what baby quilts are for.
ReplyDeleteCan you try over dying the entire quilt with the color of the backing? You might be able to salvage the quilt that way. It will not be the same as your original project but it might even out everything.

I suggest using the color wash sheets before anything else. If that doesn't work try tea dying, I did that to the one I had before the color wash sheets, it will be a bit darker but not much and should hide the bleeding. It all depends on how long you leave it in the dye. Do it in a bucket, it dyes everything. Look up how to do it before you start. Hope it helps. I still have mine! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOh how heartbreaking! I did have this happen on a Quilt of Valor I made. It is now a car quilt for my daughter :(. I often put a little bit of Dawn Dish soap in the water when I wash a quilt. I also use color catchers from now on. I don't think it spoils your quilt and it will probably bother you more than anyone else. It is still a wonderful quilt!
ReplyDeleteAmy. I've had this happen, too. But you can be sure the child will love it just the same. It's a reminder that we are all a little human and can't always fix a mistake. It's just a mistake, btw. Not a sin! It is beautiful and you did an awesome job on those letters!
ReplyDeleteOh My! I have never seen bleeding that badly. How disappointing for you. Maybe you could use some Rit day and make the quilt darker, but you never know what the color will turn out then...so sorry for your troubles. What brand of fabric was the one that bled so badly?
ReplyDeleteI have had this happen to me too. I used grandmas stain remover. You can buy it at hobby lobby or at quilt store. Its wonderful stuff. It gets out blood, ink, grease. EVERYTHING, good luck.

DeleteI really feel for you, it happened to me for the first time only last week, Kona Solid 'Tangerine' ran into lime green and white on the quilt top and binding. Washed the quilt with a colour catcher and it came out of the quilt top but wouldn't budge from the lime green binding so I undid that section and replaced it. Hope you find something to work for you :)

Wow! That quilt is so cute. I'm sorry for the color bleed. Since the bleed through seems to be in the seems, you could run baby ric-rac over the seems. That would take a-lot of ric-rac. I agree with a previous comment -- Whoever receives it is going to love it anyway! It's darling.
