My favorite part of blogging...

September 30, 2008

My favorite part of blogging isn't writing. I enjoy writing, but I think I am rather boring. That's okay, though. I didn't have any expectations on being the next big thing in the blog world. :o) My favorite part is the behind the scenes things. I love to mess with my template and find new tricks and tips to use on my blog. I love learning how CSS works and figuring out html codes.

For instance, last weekend I implemented a hidden admin control panel so I could hide the Blogger navigation bar. It makes getting around the behind the scene areas of my blog so much easier and it gives the added benefit of making my blog look tidy.

This morning Sunny debuted her new blog look (which is lovely, btw) and shared a tip that was what I was looking for all day long yesterday! A way to create a numbered page navigation links to replace the 'older' and 'newer' links that are normally used to get around in the archives of a blog. Now that was enough to my heart go pitter-pat and I dove right in my template to make the changes. The script was super easy to install and I love how it makes getting around my blog much simpler.

Since Sunny was gracious enough to share her find, I decided to share my favorite sites that have helped me makes changes on my blog, too. Besides, I had nothing interesting else to say today.
If anyone needs help with changing the templates on their blog, I would be happy to help.

My dream, to create templates to share. Maybe someday. :o)

'Nuther migraine

September 27, 2008

I am babying myself big time today. I don't want a repeat of the last migraine I had.

Fireproof!!! Tonight!! Update...

September 26, 2008

Run, do not walk, to go see Fireproof. It's a great movie and the story line is fabulous!! It's funny, touching, serious and intense. At one point I was squeezing Russ' hand really hard. He didn't seem to mind. :o) It was fun being in a full theater (which was encouraging) and sharing laughter with 100's of people. I dare say there were times when there wasn't a dry eye in the theater, including hubz and me. When the movie was over, the room burst into applause. It's been years since I have been in a movie where that has happened.

I give the movie 5 out of 5 !

Oh, watching dreamy Kirk Cameron was pretty great, too. *wink*

Fireproof!!! Tonight!!

Rusty and I are going on a movie date tonight...alone....no children...just him and me...*blissful sigh*.... to see the movie premiere of FIREPROOF.  I've been counting down the days to it's opening night for months.

I'll post my review after I see it. :o)

Things In My House Thursday # 9

September 25, 2008

This week, I have decided to share with you my coat rack/shelf. The story behind this lovely maple piece is that my ex-husband made it for me for our first wedding anniversary. I like it and it's too practical to allow that small detail be a reason to get rid of it. *wink* For the last two Christmases I have forgotten to put the snowman box away. It may just need to live there from now on.

When Holden was a little boy, he bought me the bugs. He thought I needed them, I guess. The butterfly I "get," the other creepy looking thing...I'm not so sure what was going on in his nine-year-old mind. I'm not so sure I want to know! I can remember his shining face as I opened up his gift. You would have thought he was giving me a fine piece of jewelry that Christmas morning. I realize they are dusty and I could have cleaned them up before I took the picture, but that would give you a false impression of my dusting skills. Besides, we have a lot more dusty work ahead of us in the den, so what's the point? :o)

This next item is Holden's back pack from his freshman year of high school. It's held up fabulously! Reagan and Mitchell now use it for trips to the library and to piano lessons. "Decoy" is Holden's nick-name. He was given that moniker when he was in Jr High because of his very clever Halloween costume he wore that year. He went dressed up as a "stupid turkey hunter." He wore Russ' hunting gear and placed the turkey decoy on his head. He got a lot of compliments on that costume that year. The men especially loved it! I wish I had a picture of him in the costume. Holden has always been clever and he has such a quick wit. He has a one liner for everything.

That's it for me this week. I can't wait to see what you decide to share for

"I'll only kiss my wife."

September 24, 2008

Kirk Cameron shows the world a beautiful example of what faithfulness in a marriage covenant looks like and through that shows the world a picture of our faithful God...

In Kirk Cameron’s new movie, “Fireproof,” he has to kiss the actress playing his wife. That was a problem. Cameron will not kiss any woman who is not his wife.

Things In My House Thursday # 8

September 19, 2008

I am unashamedly going to copy-cat MSM's Things In My House Thursday post because I have the same issue with needing to have writing instruments, rulers, scissors and paper close at hand at all times. :o)

This is the pencil cup in my "office." I am picky about the type of pen I write with. I prefer fine point pens and they can be hard to find. I like to keep them all in one place.  I have lowered the boom and told my boys that my scissors are to never leave my space. I get frustrated having to look all over for them when I need them. I warned you that I had issues. :o) The red heart rock paperweight came from my daughter, Haley. The red pens are for correcting school work. Yes, I use red. My boys do not suffer from low self-esteem because of it.

This is the cup at Russ' office. Normally, he has his pens and pencils all over the table. Every few days I gather them from the table and put them in the cup for him. I also remove "my pens" he has borrowed from my cup. *wink*

These are the containers that are in the kitchen. Notice the scissors? Yes, they have their own pair and if they put them away, they will have no need to use mine. That's the theory, at least.

Thanks for letting me steal your the idea, MSM.  :o)

One year ago today...AND...My Husband Rocks

I began to save my lungs and my money!! Just in time for the gas prices to take a huge hike. *wink* My not smoking has opened up doors for me that I wouldn't have been able to do if I was a smoker. For example, I can babysit my friends' babies. I can now go to places and not worry if there is a place for me to smoke or deal with people who will give me an evil look as I do so.  Admittedly, there are times when I miss it and when stressful situations pop up, I am very tempted to light up, but they are fleeting and those moments come farther and farther apart.

I am grateful for the mercy and grace that God gave to me as I kicked the smoking addiction...

He supported me during the not-so-fun times that come with quitting smoking. :o)

Spoiling Elizabeth

September 17, 2008

Elizabeth, if you recall, lost her home this last June to the Flood of 2008, when the Cedar River decided that it needed to visit more of the city. It was not good, putting it mildly. The city is still a mess and has a long way to go to recover from the devastation. I feel for those in Texas who went through hurricane Ike.

Elizabeth and her family still don't have a home of their own. I know they would appreciate prayers for wisdom in that area.

Back to the topic at hand... Spoiling Elizabeth. Elizabeth does not pamper herself at all. She pampers everyone else in her family, but neglects to do anything for herself. Mary Ann came up with the brilliant idea of taking Elizabeth out to lunch and taking her to a salon for a hair cut and style. She graciously asked me if I wanted to join in on the fun. I said, "Yes!!"

Here she is getting pampered.

Me, Elizabeth and Mary Ann.

Thank you, Mary Ann, for letting me join in on the fun and the blessing of pampering Elizabeth. :o)

Things I forgot

September 16, 2008

Monday I had the privilege of babysitting a 7 week old baby boy named Tobin. It didn't take long for him to remind me of the things I had forgotten about the early weeks of caring for a baby.

For example:
  • taking a shower is a luxury.
  • eating is, too.
  • should I mention the bliss of being able to visit the ladies' room?
  • dishes pile up very quickly.
  • vacuuming doesn't happen.
  • walking for miles without leaving the living room.
  • needing to change shirts on both parties several times a day.
  • laundry piles up quickly, too.
I can't wait until he comes back again...  :o)

Philippians 4

September 14, 2008

I am under a lot of stress right now. My flesh responds to stress by being anxious...So I am meditating on Philippians 4 today. I want to learn to have prayer be my response to stress, instead of anxiety. Oh, how I long for the day when I will be rid of this sinful flesh...

1 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

2 I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar’s household.
23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

Love or Die

September 13, 2008

This morning I was catching up on my blog reading (I am still far, far behind) and began by reading book reviewer extraordinaire Tim Challies' post because his post title caught my eye. Love or Die.  It's the name of his latest book review. The following quote from the book is what prompted me to order my own copy. I'll simply say, my love is being tested at this time.

Love requires both a subject and an object, thus love is a corporate learning experience. We grow in love by engagement with other people, not in isolation from them.

Christians cannot develop love by sitting at home alone on the couch watching TV preachers or by attending a weekly, one-hour church service. It is only through participation in "the household of God," the local church (1 Tim, 3:15), with all of its weaknesses and faults, that love is taught, modeled, learned, tested, practiced, and matured. By dealing with difficult people, facing painful conflicts, forgiving hurts and injustices, reconciling estranged relationships, and helping needy members, our love is tested and matures.

One simply cannot grow in love without the stresses and strains of life together in the household of God, the local church. The local church truly is "a spiritual workshop for the development of agape love" and "one of the very best laboratories in which individual believers may discover their real spiritual emptiness and begin to grow in agape love." If you are not a participating member of a local church, then you are not in God's school of love.

The book can be ordered from Lewis and Roth Publishers

He told my story...

September 12, 2008

...and much more eloquently, I will add. *wink* Chris Rosebrough of Fighting for the Faith shared his testimony on how he escaped legalism and found the amazing grace that is found in the Gospel.

You can read his account here, here, here and here or listen to it via podcast. It is well worth the time...

Chris said:

The Gospel Has Taught Me That...

Because of Jesus Christ ALL of my sins are forgiven. This includes every sin I will ever commit in my lifetime.

Because of Jesus Christ I have peace with God.

Because of Jesus Christ I have a Loving Father in Heaven.

Because of Jesus Christ I have hope.

Jesus Christ will one day say to me, ”Well done thou good and faithful servant.“ Not because of any righteousness on my part but because of His Righteousness that is given to me as a gift through faith.

Now that's great news!

My Husband Rocks ~ Hardworking

Come join the fun of My Husband Rocks Friday.

We aren't done with the den yet, but it's getting close. All that's needed to do in there is inside work, so he is now working on the rest of the windows on the house to get most of them done before the snow flies.

My baby works all day long doing some thing I don't understand with chips for cell phones, and then comes home and works another 4 or 5 hours on the house. I am grateful to have hardworking and highly intelligent man as my husband.

Things In My House Thursday # 7

September 11, 2008

I love pottery and crocks. I have several crocks around the house that I use as garbage cans. It's an idea I stole from my mom. This Rowe Pottery crock one is my favorite. My mom special ordered it for Russ and me as a wedding gift. It's about 6 1/2 " high. Just the right size for a plant, cut flowers or odds and ends.

The worst ever migraine

September 9, 2008

I began to get a migraine at our church's business meeting Sunday night. It was a stressful, emotionally charged meeting that lasted over 3 hours. I ended up leaving church sobbing. It was hard to see my pastors being unfairly attacked. The stress of that meeting carried over to Monday, I decided to deal with it by bingeing, yes...bingeing on a whole bag of Brachs Malted Milk Balls. Big mistake. Not just because of the huge amount of calories, but chocolate and migraines do not go together well. Last night, I went to bed with the worst migraine I have ever had in my life. I had taken all the Frova, migraine medication, I was allowed. I took extra Xanax to try to get me to relax and to make me "pass out" so I could sleep through the the pain. Nothing was working. Russ rubbed my head for 2 hours as I alternated from sobbing, to almost relaxing enough to fall asleep, when the next wave of pain would come and I would sob again. Poor man felt so helpless. At 11:00 he called Laurie while I stumbled into the bathroom to run a hot tub bath, hoping the warm water would help me relax, which it did. After calling Laurie, he called my doctor's office and talked to who was on call. They said if I can't get to sleep, to get me to the ER where they would give me a large does of antihistamine in shot form to help me with the pain. I am thankful we didn't need to resort to that measure, but it's good to know what I can do if I ever have a migraine that severe again.

My Husband Rocks ~ His walk with God

When I listen to my husband pray, my heart skips a beat.

When I come down the steps in the early morning and see him reading his Bible, I seem to fall deeper in love with him.

When I watch him serve at our church, my hear swells with pride.

I thank You, Father, for blessing me with a godly man to love....

This is one of my favorite pictures.

My daddy bought it for us for Christmas a few years ago. I love it because I love chickadees, birch trees and I love that our names are carved in the trunk along with the year we got married. :o)
